Celebrating 30 Years of Maurer-Stutz
In 2026, Maurer-Stutz proudly celebrates 30 years of serving communities, businesses, industries, and public agencies throughout Illinois and the Midwest. Over the last three decades, we have grown from a small team with a shared vision into a multidisciplinary consulting firm known for technical excellence, trusted relationships, and a commitment to personalized client service.
Since 1996, Maurer-Stutz has helped shape communities through engineering, surveying, planning, and consulting services that support infrastructure, economic development, and responsible growth. While our services and team have evolved over the years, one thing has remained constant: a commitment to working alongside our clients to help them achieve their goals.

The foundation of Maurer-Stutz was built through the combination of talented professionals, strong industry relationships, and a desire to provide a higher level of service. The firm’s roots include Maurer-McGillem Engineers, R.A.N. Consultants, Inc., and Anderson Engineering Consultants, Ltd., bringing together a diverse range of expertise that would establish the foundation for the company we know today. Under the leadership of founders Dave Maurer and Joe Stutz, Maurer-Stutz quickly earned a reputation for responsiveness, technical expertise, and a relationship-driven approach to business.
As the company grew, several key milestones helped shape its future. Early opportunities with the Illinois Department of Transportation positioned Maurer-Stutz as a trusted partner on transportation and infrastructure projects, creating momentum for continued growth. Over time, the firm expanded its capabilities across surveying, municipal engineering, water and wastewater systems, structural engineering, environmental services, agriculture, geospatial technologies, and other specialized disciplines.

The acquisition of Feldmann & Associates in 2004 further strengthened the firm’s expertise and broadened the services available to clients. In addition to expanding the firm’s structural engineering capabilities, the addition of Terry Feldmann and his team helped establish what would become Maurer-Stutz’s Agricultural Engineering Group. What began as a relatively small service line has grown into one of the firm’s largest and most impactful areas of practice, serving agricultural producers and agribusiness clients throughout the region and remaining a cornerstone of the company today.
Growth, however, has never been solely about expanding services. From the beginning, Maurer-Stutz has been built on relationships. Founders Dave Maurer and Joe Stutz believed that successful projects started with strong partnerships, both within the company and throughout the communities they served. Their commitment to fostering those relationships helped establish a culture that still defines the organization today.
One of the most significant milestones in company history came in 2009 when Maurer-Stutz completed an internal ownership transition. Leadership passed from Dave Maurer and Joe Stutz to Keith Plavec, Terry Feldmann, Steve Arahood, and Rick Anderson, ensuring the company remained privately held and employee-owned. The transition represented more than a change in ownership. It reflected a shared commitment to preserving the values, culture, and independence that had defined Maurer-Stutz since its founding.

While projects, technology, and leadership have evolved over the years, the culture of Maurer-Stutz has remained remarkably consistent. Long-time employees often describe the company as a place where people are valued as individuals, where accomplishments are celebrated, and where relationships matter. Professional growth is encouraged, teamwork is embraced, and employees are supported both personally and professionally.
That people-first philosophy extends beyond the office. Throughout our history, strong relationships with clients, communities, and industry partners have been central to our success. Much of our growth has been driven not only by the quality of our work, but by the trust we have built through decades of collaboration and service.

In 2022, Maurer-Stutz marked another important chapter in its history with a second internal ownership transition. Building on the path established in 2009, the transition welcomed a new generation of employee owners and continued the firm’s long-standing commitment to remaining privately held and employee-owned. This transition helped position Maurer-Stutz for continued growth while carrying forward the relationships, values, and culture that have shaped the company throughout its history.
Today, Maurer-Stutz continues to provide professional engineering, surveying, planning, environmental, agricultural, geospatial, and infrastructure services to clients throughout Illinois and the Midwest. Our reputation has been built on personalized client service, strong technical expertise, and a commitment to Working With You By Design.
The firm continues to evolve to meet the changing needs of its clients. Most recently, in 2024, Maurer-Stutz added a dedicated Geospatial Services Group, expanding its capabilities in GIS, mapping, spatial data management, and technology-driven solutions. The addition reflects the firm’s ongoing commitment to innovation and its ability to adapt to emerging client needs while building upon decades of surveying and technical expertise.
