Engineers Day at the Peoria Riverfront Museum

February 22, 2023/in Uncategorized/by Maurer-Stutz

February 19th kicked off the start of National Engineers Week with a day full of events and fun at the Peoria Riverfront Museum for Engineers Day! Engineering activities such as Tech Talks, demonstrations, and a scavenger hunt all took place throughout the museum and were conducted by local engineering groups. Free admission to the museum was sponsored by Maurer-Stutz, Inc., various local engineering companies, engineering societies including ASCE and American Society of Materials, and Caterpillar. As a bonus this year, the Caterpillar Visitor Center located next door to the museum was also open and offered free admission as well. A total of 1,988 people visited Engineers Day on Sunday, one of the highest attendance records at the museum.

MSI’s very own Keith Plavec and Curtis Lynn helped organize and oversee the 31st Annual ASCE Index Card Bridge Contest. Logan Donley, a current Bradley student, also assisted with the bridge competition and will be one of MSI’s summer interns. The competition included twenty-five teams from eight different schools and Keith served as the event emcee. Additionally, engineering firms, engineering and science societies, science related industries, and local code and robotics groups hosted interactive engineering activities throughout the upper and lower levels of the museum. Gayle Baker from Maurer-Stutz hosted a booth that explored buoyancy. Participants were able to build their own boat out of aluminum foil and test the structure and stability of their creation by placing coins in their boat and seeing how much weight the boat can carry before it sank.

It was a wonderful day kicking off the start of National Engineers Week and an excellent opportunity to visit both the Peoria Riverfront Museum and the Caterpillar Visitor Center and allow children and families to explore and participate in a variety of hands-on activities centered around engineering!

Food, Farms andamp; Biofuel Features MSI and Biogas Digesters

May 16, 2022/in Uncategorized/by Maurer-Stutz

Terry Feldmann, PE, Principal and Agricultural Group Manager, had the opportunity to sit down with Sarah Michaels of Food, Farms andamp; Biofuels segment at WEEK Channel 25 to discuss an ongoing project with a client in southern Illinois that has installed a biogas digester. This feature brought a spotlight to Agricultural Engineering and the broadness of the profession. This special focused on livestock system and manure handling and utilization design in the agricultural engineering field.

So the way a digester works is by growing and maintaining bacteria that utilizes the organic matter in the manure. We utilize heating that up to around a little over a 100 degrees Fahrenheit to encourage the growth and of methanogenic bacteria that those are the ones that produce process the organic matter in the manure, or a large majority of the OM, and converts it into methane.

One of the nice pluses when you produce the biogas can be converted to power. The other benefit that the effluent, or the leftover manure, still has pretty much all the nutrients that farmers and crops can utilize, nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium. The farmer can still use the digester effluent for fertilizing his crops and add value to a byproduct from the livestock by applying it to the crops.

Maurer-Stutz, Inc. has provided planning which included engineering survey, soils and geotechnical investigation. Design services included permitting with relevant state and federal agencies as well as developing site and structural design plans. MSI also provided limited construction observation for the project. MSI looks forward to sharing more about this project in a future feature once the project is completed.

Design Story: Bridge at Laura Bradley Park

April 11, 2022/in Uncategorized/by Maurer-Stutz

Maurer-Stutz, Inc. recently completed planning, design, and resident engineering services for the Peoria Park District on the Bradley Park Bridge Replacement project in Peoria, IL. Located in Lower Laura Bradley Park, this bridge provides access to two dog parks, several disk golf holes, and the District’s Maintenance and Facilities Building. Over time, the existing deck beams and timber piles had become deteriorated to the point that a new bridge was required. Leveraging the longstanding relationship between the PPD Planning Department and MSI Staff, a new three-sided precast concrete arch structure was proposed. This innovative bridge design is economical, functional, and aesthetically pleasing.

The new structure allows the natural stream bed to reestablish, provides a wider opening for large storm events, and has less maintenance than steel or deck beam bridge structures. In addition to the new bridge, the existing roadway was improved via new pavement, curbs, ADA sidewalks, fencing, and improved roadway geometrics.

“Maurer Stutz was proud to be part of this project. We enjoyed working with the Peoria Park District and being part of a project that will be a large benefit to the community. We were also able to bring a group of Bradley Engineering students out through the ASCE Student Chapter to see the project during construction.” – Curtis Lynn, PE, Construction Group Lead

The bridge was recently celebrated by the Peoria Park District with a ribbon cutting event. Several of MSI’s Transportation and Construction Engineering professionals were in attendance. Mike Friberg, RLA-ASLA (PPD Planner and MSI’s client for the project) commented that the delivery drivers and park maintenance crews LOVE the new entrance to their building…no more jumping the curb! Check out the WEEK 25 News Coverage.
