Making a Difference, One Day at a Time.

Engineers from Maurer-Stutz and Construction Crews from Stark Excavating, Inc. have been working hard to reconstruct the deteriorated MacArthur Highway Bridge in Peoria, IL.andnbsp; The project consists of the removal of the existing structure and roadway and replacing it with an updated design, green infrastructure, andnbsp; and an optimized geometry.andnbsp; While the team is working hard to stay on schedule during the Spring and Summer weather, they began to notice an unexpected audience.andnbsp; Children from the Valeska Hinton Early Childhood Education Center in Peoria, IL started to take daily “Field Trips” to check up on the construction progress.andnbsp; This presented Maurer-Stutz and Stark Excavating with an opportunity to interact and share their knowledge of bridge construction with young members of the community.andnbsp; The students were able to learn how Engineers, Laborers, Equipment Operators, Ironworkers, and Carpenters all come together to get big tasks, like building a bridge, done!

Tower Inspections with Maurer-Stutz Unmanned

April 23, 2018/in Uncategorized/by Maurer-Stutz

Maurer-Stutz Unmanned has been out and about doing some Water Tower Inspections in the Peoria Area!

Have you had a need to inspect something that is difficult or relatively unsafe to reach?andnbsp; In the case of water towers that is usually the case.andnbsp; In the days of our aging infrastructure, some towers have become unsafe just to climb the ladder halfway up.andnbsp; The solution is to use drones!andnbsp; By flying an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) that is equipped with a high resolution camera, Maurer-Stutz Unmanned is capable of gaining some of the most valuable data with respect to water towers in minutes!andnbsp; It can be as simple as checking to see if the lid is closed or assessing the extent of rust and corrosion of the tank.andnbsp; Other examples include checking work after a contractor completes maintenance, surveying the impacts of wildlife on equipment, and inspecting for structural fatigue or damage.

Hazards like cellular antennas mounted on or near the tower pose serious health risks for inspectors when they are exposed to full strength signals in close proximity.andnbsp; These hazards require lengthy and cumbersome coordination with other organizations and agencies.andnbsp; That advance coordination typically ends up being the longest part of the entire inspection process.andnbsp; By using a drone, andnbsp;we are able to obtain the necessary data without putting someone in harms way or having to go through all of the advance coordination.

February 27, 2018/in Uncategorized/by Maurer-Stutz

The Illinois River crested around noon on Monday February 26th in Peoria.andnbsp; While there are signs that the flood waters are receding, the flooding will likely hang around for about the next two weeks.andnbsp; The impacts of this year’s flooding have been mild with only 25.1 feet as the max so far. The flood event of April 2013 reached 29.35 feet besting a 70 year old record.andnbsp; The depth now is 4.25 feet lower than that event.andnbsp; Maurer-Stutz Unmanned took to the skies to view the flood waters.

When Land Surveys Were a Modern Marvel

October 24, 2017/in Uncategorized/by Maurer-Stutz

The Public Land Survey System was created because, in the 1780s, the new United States of America needed money. The Revolutionary War had left the federal government with debts, and its leaders planned to raise funds by selling off land where American colonists had yet to settle.andnbsp; Atlas Obscura on has a great article on how the Public Land Survey System was created.
